For week 20 of 2019 tips & hacks on moving without a “goal, upgrade your home workouts and moving while traveling.

Our FitLabPGH Feature this week was Lily Engro. We are always looking for more Features!!  Learn more about our Features and submit a questionnaire to be highlighted, but first check out the tips & hacks for this week below:

FitLabPGH Features #20:19 Lily Engro

FitLabPGH is a podcast about movement and movement opportunities in the Pittsburgh, PA area.  Once a week we also highlight a FitLabPGH mover…someone who understands that movement is a lifestyle…not just an activity.  The questions are lightly edited to allow for easy readability.  Click FitLabPGH Features for more info if you want to be featured/know someone who should be featured.

This Week: Lily Engro

Are you a Pittsburgh native? If not, what brought you to the Pittsburgh area? No, I’m from Erie, PA. I would visit Pittsburgh occasionally growing up but to be honest it was not somewhere that stood out in my mind. I first moved here for an internship in college and fell in love with the city. After college I moved to North Carolina for more job opportunities, but found myself wanting to be back in PA and am so happy I now get to call Pittsburgh home!

What are your three favorite movement activities in the Pittsburgh area? Hiking, biking, and kayaking (I also want to say climbing but I still haven’t done that outside…)

Describe your fantasy movement-focused vacation…cost is not an object…where do you go and what do you do? Bikepacking across the US to see all the national parks and forests and other places I want to visit. I meet great people and they show me their town, give me the scoop on all the best spots for local eats as well as trails to check out. Taking my time for as long as I want in places I like, probably staying at a lot of cute AirBnBs. Recording lots of new hikes in new environments. I could keep going… now you guys have me thinking of all different types of trips I want to take.

What is your go-to weekday breakfast? Your weekend breakfast? During the week I’d say it’d be some kind of homemade yogurt parfait or overnight oats. On the weekend, an over easy egg and toast.

What is your favorite thing to eat in Pittsburgh? Note: it does not need to be healthy. Millie’s ice cream.

What is the most unusual and/or challenging movement activity you’ve done? Would you do it again? I went backpacking for the first time last September and it was the most challenging thing I think I’ve done, and I would 10000% do it again and plan to!

What movement activity/event are you looking forward to in the next year? I can’t wait to get out and explore more trails in the Pittsburgh area, go backpacking again, ride my bike 25 miles on the riverfront trails since I turned 25 this year, and hopefully so much more!

Would you rather go scuba diving or skydiving? Scuba diving. I was a swimmer my whole life and I still feel most comfortable in the water. I feel very at peace underwater and want to definitely give it a try at some point! I’ve only been in an airplane a handful of times and would be terrified of sky diving.

What is your favorite recovery or self-care practice? Couch cuddles with my dog Merris and drinking water! Everyone should drink more water.

What is the one place visitors to Pittsburgh “must” see? Riding your bike or walking the riverfront trail from Millvale to the North Shore, with a stop on Washington’s Landing for the city view from the island and just to be on an island in the river a few miles from downtown. That’s crazy! When we first went on that trail my boyfriend didn’t believe me it was even an island. He knows now I was right. I also try to encourage my friends and anyone really to value Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas a short drive away as great outdoor spaces. I think a lot of people get caught up in wanting to go West or to the PNW to be outdoorsy or adventurous. I really want to showcase Pittsburgh as a great place, and that you don’t have to live in the Rocky Mountains to be outdoorsy. I think we get bogged down in that these days with social media. Pittsburgh has so many wonderful trails a short drive from the city. If you drive 1-2 hours there are even more opportunities for adventures. I don’t think enough people take advantage of that and so I try to make it so that the trailhead 30 minutes away from my house is still something I think is a must see, because it is to me!

Luke Koval- A Pittsburgh Mover & Educator

Luke Koval (in his own words): Started personal training while getting my degree in Kinesiology from Penn State. I had a great mentor at a local gym that taught me a lot about the industry and business. It was a great job to have while I was completing my M.S in Wellness and Human Performance from Pitt as well since it was easy to pack my free time with clients and not be tied down to a 9-5 gig. I have been involved in sports and fitness my whole life. Team sports growing up, Bodybuilding through college, which got me into powerlifting while simultaneously living to be outdoors on the trails. Preferably mountain biking but two torn triceps have ended my season the last couple years. My passion is to pass on the passion to others. Nothing makes me happier than seeing someone introduced to a new healthy outlet/activity and fall in love with it. I have seen so many individuals go from survive to thrive just by providing them with an option and coaching them through it. I love it.

FitLabPGH Movement Tips & Lifestyle Hacks 19:19

Movement is a lifestyle, not just an activity…because movement is part of what makes life complete.  Each week our #podcast FitLabPGH brings you a new #interview on Sunday, FitLabPGH Features on Thurs and movement tips/lifestyle #hacks MWF.  All highlighting movement in the #Pittsburgh area.

For week 19 of 2019 tips & hacks for safe cycling, fartlek w friends and creating a healthy habit whether you are two or four-legged.

Our FitLabPGH Feature this week was Puddin of FitLabPGH, a yellow lab. We are always looking for more Features!!  Learn more about our Features and submit a questionnaire to be highlighted, but first check out the tips & hacks for this week below:

FitLabPGH Features #19:19 Puddin aka Newlander’s Strawberry Puddin

FitLabPGH is a podcast about movement and movement opportunities in the Pittsburgh, PA area.  Once a week we also highlight a FitLabPGH mover…someone who understands that movement is a lifestyle…not just an activity.  The questions are lightly edited to allow for easy readability.  Click FitLabPGH Features for more info if you want to be featured/know someone who should be featured.

This Week: Puddin aka Newlander’s Strawberry Puddin

Are you a Pittsburgh native? If not, what brought you to the Pittsburgh area? No – I was born in Chesterland, Ohio at Newlander Labradors.  When my breeder, Des, reluctantly decided to part with me, the FitLabPGH Team purchased me and moved me to Finleyville, PA two weeks ago (I’ve been told that’s in the South Hills of Pittsburgh).

What are your three favorite movement activities in the Pittsburgh area? Hiking in Mingo Creek Park; running around the back yard with Maggie the Black Lab (Ben doesn’t like it when we do this); stretching (downward facing dog is my favorite pose)

Describe your fantasy movement-focused vacation…cost is not an object…where do you go and what do you do? My life is pretty much a vacation because I’m not a working dog.  I would enjoy a car ride followed by a hike…bonus points if I get wet and muddy on the hike, then toweled off by a friendly human.

What is your go-to weekday breakfast? Your weekend breakfast? I stick with dog food for my main meals, supplemented by the occasional carrot or berry (blueberries are my favorite).

What is your favorite thing to eat in Pittsburgh? Note: it does not need to be healthy. So far, all I’ve tried is dog food, carrots, berries, and ice chips…I’ve heard good things about the doggy ice cream at Bruster’s…I’m hoping to try that soon…

What is the most unusual and/or challenging movement activity you’ve done? Would you do it again? Climbing and descending stairs! I learned to climb up the stairs pretty quickly, but I was really nervous about going down the stairs…Ben has been coaching me, and I will definitely keep practicing!

What movement activity/event are you looking forward to in the next year? Climbing up and down the stairs without supervision…I want to be able to follow Maggie the Black Lab (and the cats).  Also, I’m looking forward to learning to jump into the Jeep (Ben said he’d rather help me in, but I’m fairly certain I can do it on my own).

Would you rather go scuba diving or skydiving? I like water. I don’t like jumping out of the Jeep…so I guess scuba diving, but I’d probably stick to doggy paddling in the water.

What is your favorite recovery or self-care practice? Naps!

What is the one place visitors to Pittsburgh “must” see? I’ve only been in the Pittsburgh area for 2 weeks. So far, I’m enjoying Mingo Creek Park.  I’ve heard South Park is nice too.

Courtney Crow- Saltsburg Kayak & Canoe Rental & More!!

Courtney Crowe (in her own words): I grew up in a small town in the Conemaugh River Valley and attended college at the Art Institute in Pittsburgh. Since that time I have worked in graphic design, and upon moving to Saltsburg found myself getting involved in local initiatives, promoting the river town and outdoor amenities. The first time I kayaked was when I moved to Saltsburg. It’s a great town with river and trail access. I joined the Conemaugh Valley Conservancy Board, which monitors watersheds, builds trails, and has acted as a partner in creating a whitewater park outside of Johnstown, PA.
