Labrador Lesson for 9/29/22:

Dog Walk Essentials.

The Labs wanted to share the essentials for a safe, fun dog walk. They asked Ben to help out with the lesson…check out the video…or just read along for the essentials. The most essential element is an engaged human, who is focused on the dogs! After that, the labs suggest you include the following items: 1. A stylish collar (the labs like climbing rope). 2. A sturdy, colorful leash (again, climbing rope is great). 3. Snacks (depending on distance/duration). 4. Water (depending on temperature). 5. A First Aid Kit.

The Labs believe in making movement a lifestyle, so, whether you have 2 legs or 4, gather the essentials, get outside, and get moving.

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 38:22 Don’t Worry About How You Look…Just Keep Moving

Labrador Lesson for 9/22/22:

Don’t worry about what you look like…just keep moving.

From Maggie the Black Lab: as Labradors, we love to move. At the moment, I’m a bit embarrassed because I have a skin infection on my head (probably a result of scratching due to allergies). My humans took me to the vet. I’m getting treatment, and I’ll be ok, but they had to shave a few spots on my head, so I’m not looking my best. But I’m not going to let that stop me from enjoying my walks in the park!

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, don’t worry about what you look like, or whether others might judge you, just move! Whether it’s a physical condition, or a lack of the latest gear, or just a fear of looking awkward, try not to worry about appearances…just move. Movement has physical and mental benefits for 2- and 4-legged movers!

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 37:22 Create a Movement Back-Up Plan

Labrador Lesson for 9/15/22:

Create a movement back-up plan.

As Labradors, we love to move. Like most movers, we have our favorite movement routine. For us, that includes hiking in our local county park. When our favorite location isn’t available, due to an event like the Covered Bridge Festival or due to icy trails, we have a movement back-up plan that allows us to keep moving.

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, we recommend creating a movement back-up plan that allows you to keep moving when life gets in the way of your preferred movement routine. Whether your favorite class is canceled or a work or family obligation prevents you from attending your movement activity of choice, if you have a back-up plan, you can still make movement part of your day. Keep a list of movement options, so that when your routine is disrupted, you can still find ways to just move.

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 36:22 A Movement Buddy Makes Moving More Fun

Labrador Lesson for 9/8/22:

A movement buddy makes moving more fun.

We are energetic Labradors. We like to get outside and get moving most days of the week. What makes our movement sessions even MORE fun? Moving with each other and our humans. If you need a little extra motivation to get moving, try adding a 2- or 4-legged movement buddy to your routine.

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, including a movement buddy into your movement routine may motivate you to move more. Side note: when introducing a new movement buddy into your existing routine, be sure to move at the pace of the slowest mover so that all participants are able to enjoy the movement experience.

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 34:22 Fall IS Coming…But Don’t Let Down Your Guard Regarding Ticks

Labrador Lesson for 8/25/22:

Fall IS coming…but don’t let down your guard regarding ticks!

We are starting to see leaves on the ground, and we can’t wait for the cooler weather of Fall…but now is NOT the time to let down your guard regarding ticks! We continue to stay away from tall grass, take our flea & tick medicine, and get regular tick checks from our humans…and we’ve had the lyme disease vaccine!

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, take precautions to avoid tick bites! For information on tick bite prevention and post-bite resources, visit www.tickencounter.org …Take precautions, be aware, then get outside and get moving!

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 33:22 Sleep Is Essential

Labrador Lesson for 8/18/22:

Sleep is Essential.

We are energetic Labradors. To keep up our energy, we need sufficient sleep. We strive for a solid 8 hours per night plus extensive naps. We understand that humans don’t sleep as much as we do, but we strongly suspect most humans aren’t getting ENOUGH sleep.

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, prioritize sleep in your healthy lifestyle plan! Developing a healthy sleep routine may help you make good sleep part of your lifestyle…and remember, nap is not a 4-letter word!

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 32:22 You Don’t Need to “Crush It” Everyday

Labrador Lesson for 8/11/22:

You don’t need to “Crush It” everyday.

We are energetic Labradors. We like to get outside and get moving most days of the week. But we know that doing TOO much puts us at risk of injury. So our humans track our mileage, and factor in the weather, and our week of movement consists of a balance of longer, more intense sessions and recovery walks.

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, remember that overtraining puts you at risk of injury, illness, or burnout. Listen to your body. Feeling extra energized? Push the intensity or duration. Feeling tired or rundown? Opt for gentle movement or an active rest day. We’re not saying you shouldn’t “get after it,” but balance your “crush it” days with recovery time! Make movement a lifestyle for your lifespan rather than a short-term goal.

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 31:22 Stay Safe Through the Dog Days of Summer

Stay Safe through the Dog Days of Summer.

According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the Dog Days of Summer, or the hottest days of the year, last from 7/3/22 to 8/11/22 this year in the US. The good news for us Labradors, who don’t enjoy the heat, is that the worst of this Summer’s heat wave may be nearing an end. But until the cool Fall weather arrives, we have a few tips: 1) avoid outdoor movement in the heat of the day. 2) seek shade and soft surfaces whenever possible. 3) bring plenty of fluids…for you and your 4-legged friends!

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, take heat safety seriously! Take precautions to prevent overheating and heat illness. Stay safe and cool today, so that you can Keep Moving tomorrow.

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 30:22 Don’t Take Your Health for Granted

Be thankful for good health.

In other words, don’t take your health, or your ability to move, for granted. We’re healthy Labradors, and we enjoy our daily walks/hikes/jogs with our humans. Recently, our humans had COVID. Luckily, they’re active, healthy people, and they had relatively mild symptoms, so they were still able to take us for our walks. We know that injuries and illness happen. When they do, appreciate the opportunity to keep moving in any way that you can. And when you ARE healthy, get outside and enjoy moving more!

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, don’t take your health for granted. Make the most of your opportunities to move, and prioritize taking care of yourself!

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 29:22 Wag More. Bark Less.

Wag More. Bark Less.

Or, for the humans: Move More. Complain Less. As Labradors, we generally have a positive attitude. Any day that we get to go outside and move with our humans is a good day. OK, so we don’t LOVE heat and humidity…especially if they’re combined with sunshine…but you won’t hear us complaining about a movement opportunity.

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, appreciate any opportunity to move. Of course you CAN find something negative in any movement session (it’s too hot; it’s raining; the class is too crowded; the instructor didn’t single me out), but you can also choose to focus on the positive aspects of any movement session. So follow the lead of the Labradors: Wag More. Bark Less.
